Our Purpose

South Austin Church began hosting an annual Pumpkin Patch in 2015.  We thoroughly enjoy the opportunity to meet and spend time with everyone in our community during the month of October, as well as to be a part of something bigger.  Thanks to your support and partnership, we are able to use the proceeds from pumpkin sales and donations to purchase turkeys, sides, rolls, and pumpkin pies for 500 families in need at Thanksgiving.

About Our Pumpkins

Our pumpkins come from Pumpkin Patch Fundraisers, who farm in the upland desert region of New Mexico, which is blessed with high elevation, dry air, and limited insect population, producing a superior product.  In cooperation with the Navajo Nation, they grow 1,200 acres or approximately 2 square miles of pumpkins and employ over 700 Native Americans during the harvest months of September and October. They also have full time off-season NM staff, comprised of entirely Native Americans, having a positive and lasting impact on a region with 42% unemployment.

Pumpkin Patch Fundraisers also exercises sustainable agricultural practices, such as, crop rotation that varies crops from year to year to limit pest problems, and thereby reducing the need for insecticides. They also use cover crops to prevent soil erosion & suppress weeds. This limits the need for the use of herbicides.  All Pumpkin Patch products are non-GMO. These responsible agricultural practices mean that we receive a great product, which has less of an impact on the environment.

Volunteer to Unload Pumpkins

The pumpkins for our annual Pumpkin Patch arrive bulk-loaded (loose, within a semi trailer). This produces a higher quality of product on delivery and eliminates the need for a forklift for unloading.  It DOES create a need for many volunteers AND a fantastic opportunity to work with people from our community on a common goal - setting up the Pumpkin Patch!  We usually have volunteers in the truck and on the ground, forming an assembly line to pass pumpkins, making this a great service project for all ages.
